Frequently asked questions about the Change-A-Bead©

Who might use a Change-A-Bead?

A Change-A-Bead is an easy way for Bead Artists to display & sell their most collectible beads.

A handmade glass bead is a miniature work of art and the Change-A-Bead offers Bead Enthusiasts and Bead Art Lovers a simple & elegant way to turn their favorite beads into individual, wearable works of art, ready to slip onto a chain or cord.

Bead Travelers can take their own collectible beads and add to or change them to match their mood or outfit of the day no matter where they are traveling.

How does a Change-A-Bead Work?

The top ball with the loop unscrews from the post to easily add or remove beads from the pendant. The loop at the top is comfortably large enough to slip over almost any neck chain. See the photos below. Please note: It is very important that the beads can spin freely on the Change-A-Bead when the top is screwed on tightly. This ensures that the threads are seated properly and the top is on securely.

Start with a Change-A-Bead and the beads you'd like to put on it.

Unscrew the top ball loop end of the Change-A-Bead and slip your beads onto the post.

Once the last bead is on, screw the top ball loop end back on the post. Slip a chain through the loop and your Change-A-Bead pendant is ready to wear.

What sizes are available?

The Change-A-Bead Pendant is currently available in two sizes: 1" & 1.5". The size is the measurement of the usable post length. The post thickness is approximately 16 gauge or 1.6mm thick.

What does "usable post length" mean?

The usable post length is the area of the post that is free to hold beads after the top has been screwed on. A 1" Change-A-Bead is shown in the photo at right and has 1" of usable post length.

What finishes does a Change-A-Bead come in?

The Change-A-Bead Pendant is available in two finishes, either a sterling silver plate over brass or solid brass with a high-quality clear electroplated finish.

Note from Beth: The sky-rocketing price of gold has made a gold plated version of the Change-A-Bead cost prohibitive and I wanted this to be an affordable product.  I did an extensive search for another way to offer a "gold colored" piece and found this solid brass with a high-quality clear electroplated finish.  The coating is plated to the brass just like a metal coating so it is long lasting and keeps the brass looking beautiful.

Why isn't the Change-A-Bead made of solid sterling silver or gold?

The precious metal (silver or gold) by itself is too soft and not strong enough to hold up to everyday wearing and the cost of the metal would make a Change-A-Bead very expensive. The Change-A-Bead is made of solid brass inside and that makes the threads very strong and long lasting. Each Change-A-Bead is inspected by hand here in Beth's studio for quality.
